Overview
Sara Blakely, created spanx in 1998 with the concept of smoothing and supporting as a goal of the undergarments. Spanx is a line of women’s shapewear made from nylon and lycra.
In 1998, Sara Blakely came up with the concept after discovering her inspiration Oprah Winfrey cut off the bottoms of her pantyhose. Sara mimicked Oprah and realized the smoothing and supportive effects this had on her body, and she decided to begin a shapewear business. That same year she acquired a patent for footless pantyhose.
After its inception, Spanx skyrocketed in popularity with celebrities. It was even featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Since the time Spanx was created, the shapewear industry has gone through many changes. Products have been innovated and enhanced from early conceptual ideas like the footless pantyhose, to full body reshapers that truly give your body a definite, beautiful, hourglass form.
The product is available to the general public, and the reviews are in!
Spanx by Sara Blakely Product Information: The Good & The Bad
Pros
- The shapewear is designed to smooth out and support trouble areas on the body.
- The company is well established and credible.
- There are a number of different styles for men and women to choose from
- They are available at many shopping centers
Cons
- As a shapewear product, it does not compete well for shaping the body as other products on the market.
- The main fabric used is nylon, which can get hot, and is not an all natural fiber
- Spanx uses compression as a main tool for reshaping, but does not use “bones” that actually put the extra weight, necessarily where you want it.
Spanx by Sara Blakely Product Information: Final Thought…
Spanx is a good product for creating a figure, but I would not recommend it for plus size women or men who need true support and reshaping. This product works best with people who are defining nice figure that they already have naturally.
A much better option for shapewear is the Ardyss Body Magic Shaper.
The Ardyss Body Magic Shaper is made from 100% natural fibers that breathe well. The support it provides is unmatched. Every garment has a definite shape, and it does a spectacular job at manipulating and reshaping your waist and figure. You can lose 2-3 dress sizes or more, in the time it takes to put on. The the Body Magic you will look and feel fantastic.![]()

Spanx Reviews & Testimonials:
Standing Room Only,
I’ve long been searching for a means
To improve the way I look in jeans.
Then I found a Spanx that binds us,
Shapes and smoothes what is behind us.
So here am I all sleek and svelte,
But such sore feet I’ve never felt!
For while this may be what I fit in,
It’s not something I can sit in.

All Bark and NO SUPPORT!
I purchased the Bra-llelujah and 2 Hide & Sleek bodysuits and was very unhappy with everything. The bra ($36.00) is a JOKE–you’re supposed to step into it and manipulate the material to fit you. I ordered my current bra size but it didn’t fit at all – my twins and I were engaged in a struggle and they won. When I finally got them in there, they were pointing south, peeking out from the sides and there was absolutely NO SUPPORT !! The bra was a comfortable material but that’s the only positive thing about it. Now, onto the Hide & Sleek bodysuit – I’ve worn several shapers but this one and the FX Shaper are the only two that I’ve ever purchased where I felt NO SUPPORT or SHAPING help of any kind. I ordered SPANX because I was tired of panty lines but I’ll take panty lines any day over this non-support especially at the hefty price of $54.00 I don’t know about the rest of the SPANX products but I guess I’ll never know because this one is a wrap for me. No SPANX You!!

Tummy bulge, anyone?
The legs on these panties are great- they don’t ride up, or dig in. But,if you have any tummy rolls (which I unfortunately do), the waistband will just roll right down and make you bulge out even more. Not exactly tummy control. The creator of spanks has come up with a terrific design for the bandless leg, now she just needs to come up with a better idea for the waist band.
